Stations of the Cross
In Luton we’re trying out a ‘stations of the cross’ project this term in schools and I wonder if it might work well in 16-19 contexts too.
The idea came from a project my church was involved with last year. We created eight pieces of art with themes loosely following the Easter story: choices, betrayal, accused, suffering, denial, death, life and hope. The art was displayed in gardens round and estate over the Easter weekend and people were invited to follow the trail.
This year we’re planning to take the idea into schools, displaying eight ‘stations’ in school corridors for the last week of term. Pupils will be able to follow the story and hopefully engage with the themes and the questions they pose. The art itself comes from the pupils: they’ve developed their own ideas around the themes and each piece is accompanied by the artist’s story.
We’re excited about the potential of this project and we’ll know soon enough whether it will work. It all goins on exhibition in seven schools across the town on Monday. I’ll be posting some more examples of the project soon, but here’s a sample to start with.
